A fantastic Restaurant in Baltimore

Chris Tallarico

My wife and I were in Baltimore this past weekend for her birthday and we decided to eat at Supano's since it was recommended to us. It was surprisingly not too busy for a Saturday evening and we were seated instantly. We had reservations, but they weren’t necessary. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant was fantastic with a live band playing music. We ordered the mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and they were delicious! For our entrees, I ordered the chicken parmesan and my wife had the ½ pound crab cake. Both entrees included a side of pasta. Within 10-15 minutes our food was brought out to us and it was all hot. The marinara sauce used for both the mozzarella sticks and the chicken parmesan was truly amazing and had so much flavor. It’s probably one of the best marinara sauces I have ever tasted and this is coming from an Italian who grew up with homemade sauce prepared every Sunday for dinner! My wife's crab cake was bursting with fresh crab meat and didn’t have any filler in it like some of the cheaper crab cakes you can get elsewhere. The crab cake came with a zesty dipping sauce which further enhanced the overall flavor of the crab cake. Not only was the food delicious, but the service was excellent as well! Ken was our waiter and he was very attentive and made sure our drinks were always filled and that our food was to our liking. We both felt that the prices were reasonable compared to other restaurants we could have dined at in the area. If you want a tasty meal and for it to be well prepared you're going to have to spend a little more for it. We both had a wonderful evening at Supano's and definitely will be coming back the next time we make a trip to Baltimore!

Just finished a fantastic meal. This was our first visit - family group of ten. Barbara, our waitress was friendly and attentive. The steaks were very tasty and juicy. The filet was not to be believed. Two fish dishes were flavorful and well balanced. One chicken dish was outstanding. We will be back!

Supano’s may be one of Baltimore’s best-kept secrets

Suzanne Loudermilk / The Baltimore Sun

Supano’s Prime Steakhouse Seafood & Pasta may be one of Baltimore’s best-kept secrets. The Inner Harbor restaurant has been at its Water Street location for almost 10 years, but many people have never heard of it.

“We’re tucked away,” said Terry Coffman, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Olga.

As soon as we walked in from the downtown alley, we felt as if we had stepped into the Rat Pack era. The low-lit room was bedecked in ornate wood, tin ceilings, brick walls and, sure enough, a big screen with crooner Frank Sinatra belting out tunes.

Black-and-white photos of other old-time stars like Bob Hope, Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin adorn the dining room. The tablecloths are red vinyl, and the menus are as big as wooden cutting boards.

We expected someone to call us “doll face” at any minute.
But the wait staff was professional and polite, including an engaging host who stopped by every table to chat.

The restaurant offers a variety of global wines by the bottle and glass, as well as a selection of cocktails and local and imported beer.

The food leans toward Italian, although thick steaks, seared in a 1,600-degree oven, and seafood are available, as the restaurant’s name indicates. “Miss Bettie” Peterson is in the kitchen, cooking pasta, soups, sauces and tiramisu as she has been doing since the 1970s.

Supano’s history goes back further than its current address. Coffman bought Velleggia’s, founded in 1937 in Little Italy, in 2005. The restaurant closed in 2008, and Coffman opened Velleggia’s on Water Street that year.

He renamed the restaurant Supano’s in 2010. If you were a fan of Velleggia’s — and we were — you’ll enjoy the restaurant’s hearty, filling fare.

The clams alla Franco were a beautiful beginning. The plump seafood nuggets were dressed in their shells with a generous amount of crab meat cloaked in a flavorful marinara sauce.

We also indulged in terrific bruschetta topped with vine-ripe tomato cubes, and a beautiful house balsamic salad that included romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and black olives, glazed with a tangy vinaigrette. It was large enough to share.

We really liked the sausage-and-peppers starter, a satisfying medley of its key ingredients bobbing invitingly in a complex, aromatic tomato sauce.

We wanted to see if the restaurant lived up to its “steakhouse” designation, and it did.

Dino’s prime rib-eye steak was a behemoth. The 16-ounce hunk of beef was succulent, delicious and pricey at $49. You can upgrade to a 22-ounce slab for $64. There are no sides with the dish, so we paired it with an adequate bowl of mashed potatoes.

It was probably subliminal after watching Sinatra’s screen performance across the room, but I ordered the chicken for the Chairman (his nickname). The tender chicken breast, sautéed in a balanced white-wine sauce, was enhanced with artichoke hearts and mushrooms, and hit all the right notes.

We added sautéed spinach for an extra charge. The leafy vegetable was overcooked, but we liked its underlying garlic tinge.

The decadent baked manicotti featured two pasta tubes, oozing luscious ricotta cheese and covered with tomato sauce and melted mozzarella cheese. We paired it with three rotund meatballs sitting in more sauce.

We ended our meal with traditional Italian desserts. The feather-light tiramisu offered more custard than cake, but we liked its creaminess. The two cannolis featured shells that were pleasantly crackly and stuffed with sweetened, whipped ricotta that spilled onto the plate.

The restaurant’s first floor, with a dining room a few steps up from the bar area, isn’t the only component of the building. A downstairs level houses a sports bar. And in mid-September, Coffman is opening a second-floor dining room and bar, along with a private club for the business community on the third floor.

The restaurant wasn’t empty on our dinnertime visit. It was populated mostly by out-of-towners, who seem to come on the recommendation of area hotels. (We gleaned this information from the conversations at neighboring tables.)

I’m not sure why Supano’s isn’t on more people’s radar locally. It’s time to get the word out.

I was in town for a concert and looked on the internet for a good steakhouse. I found this place and I absolutely loved it. I look forward to going back. The owner parked my car for me and stopped by the table to make sure everything was perfect.

This place is amazing! One of a kind in Baltimore. Thank you 🙂

Willam Hunt, Baltimore, MD

Took my parents to Supano’s last night to listen to some Sinatra and dine. Awesome as usual. Re-learned about their mother's day special. It always is Mom’s eat free. We will be back Sunday. We will also be back for father's day same deal but I eat free. “Free Steak” that my kind of life.

Bill M., Summit, Va

Sheraton City Center Hotel recommended this Baltimore Icon. One of the Best Steaks I’ve ever eaten and I’m from Nebraska. Love dry aged beef. Great red cab selection. Calamari was superb. Do not miss this local restaurant. No chains for me…..

Sophia, Ellicott City, MD

We came in for my nephew’s birthday tonight and were so impressed! What a warm inviting atmosphere with selections on the menu from Italian, Baltimore seafood and prime steaks. Our waitress was Holly and she was so professional and catered to our every need. We didn’t have room for dessert but she recommended the tiramisu from a recipe over 70 years old. Best we’ve ever had! We will be back to hear the jazz next time!

Joey Barnes, Tampa Florida

Just had the best filet mignonette and crab cake I ever had the pleasure of consuming. Loved the Sinatra.

Ed Enoch, New York City, MD

Found this out of the way place that only you could stumble on or be directed from a local. I know from New York that you ask the person from the front desk or outside where to go. They know they live here. The answer to the question was easy for them and immediate. Supano’s. Now I know why. Exquisite food, ambiance, personal service from the front door to the owner actually sitting down with us to see if our experience was superb. Wow 5 stars. Like the comedian Lewis says, what pressure but I believe this restaurant will handle it. Out of town find of the year.

Tiffany, Philadelphia, PA

Went on Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised by the eclectic mix of people enjoying themselves … earthy types mingling with business men, mingling with urban types…very good to see… and a very progressive establishment! The food was great but the karaoke was better. I left wanting to come back! Go here and enjoy!

I was so incredibly fortunate to have stumbled into the best classic Italian, steak and seafood combination restaurant I have experienced in all of my almost 70 years. I came back the next night with five colleagues from across the country age each of them agreed that they had some of the best tasting entrees they had experienced in years.

Will return again & again!

We always make special trips to Baltimore just to eat here every few months. We’ve made the 5+ hour drive on my birthday, our anniversary, and just on a whim on a weekend. The food, the drink, and the atmosphere is beyond perfect. Can’t wait to go again!

Denise, Gambrills, MD

From the cream of crab, the pasta dishes, crab cake and a the small steak that would feed three all were delicious! Loved the place so much we returnedd after our show to check out the lower level sports lounge which was fun! We ended the night back upstairs for Karoke and pizza. Four nights of fun in one! Don’t miss this place on Water Street!

So, three of us girls looked up a place to eat at the last minute. The service from the door to the floor was good. The food was even better. The ambiance was faultless and the decor around ‘The Rat Pack’ is splendid. We plan on definitely returning and bring more friends with us!

Plenty of delicious food, served hot and quickly

My hubby and I just got back from a warm and cozy dinner at Supano's.
It is a classic Italian steakhouse centered around Frank Sinatra with lots of charm. Our server was friendly and attentive. Our meals were served hot and delicious. I had the shrimp and scallops with marinara and a side of asparagus. My husband had their 'cake and steak'. A crab cake and filet. I really enjoyed my meal. The marinara was old world. Just the way my Italian Grandmother use to make it and there were more shrimp and scallops than I could eat. The crab cakes are fantastic! We shared. My husband also really enjoyed his filet and although he tries not to eat too much red meat, he ate every morsel tonight. We were 'full to the brim' by the time we turned our dishes over to the server. Our server checked back often and the hostess stopped by at one point to make sure all was good. Supano's is a bit pricey, but we knew that going in. Quite frankly, we feel some of the other reviews were unfair compared to what we experienced. Which was, plenty of delicious food, served hot and quickly. (We were served our meals 15 minutes after we ordered) in a clean and friendly, throw back environment.
It was a rainy evening, so we ate indoors, but there is an outdoor seating area near their quiet front door. Also, there is a more casual area in the lower level, we saw several families with kids head down there. We are not from Baltimore, but the friendly atmosphere we received our first night in town got our trip off to a great start.

Jennifer & Robert Starks

We thought Mr. G’s Frank Sinatra program was great! We also loved the blues/jazz combo, it was great too! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Absolutely magical evening.

Marty and Judy Hughes, Baltimore, MD

We found Supano's to be a rare find. It's tucked away in an alley in Baltimore and is an outstanding place for food and music. We loved the group called Down Stairs Jazz and Blues. We hated to see the music come to an end, but on our next trip to Baltimore, it will be our first stop.

Darrell, Baltimore, MD

Bring back the $3 frosty mugs!!!!!!!!!! asap

Laurie Blecha

I am addicted to Supano’s eggplant parm! I can’t get enough of it. I’ll be back again and again!!

Gregg H., Thurmont, MD

My wife and I had dinner here and the food, ambiance and service were outstanding. The owner, Terry Coffman, not only sat & chatted with us during our dinner, but drove us back to our hotel in his car. What a gentleman! We were very impressed and enjoyed our evening. A class act.
Awesome Crabcakes and Steaks

Marty G., Baltimore, MD

Thought of Supano’s as Italian but was I fooled. Not only Italian but “Prime Steaks TOO” Love the “Baby Crab Cakes” everything is a "Taste of Baltimore” We the locals love you.

Clare L., OH

I highly recommend the macaroni and cheese. It quickly became my favorite mac and cheese of all time. The cheese they use is creamy and is unlike any other. It will melt in your mouth and will quickly become your favorite too.

Gene Bonner, Baltimore, MD

My daughter was in town with her three children and we had a wonderful time at your restaurant on Saturday. The food and music was great. We will be back with others in our family.

David Worrell, Nottingham, MD

We have eaten here several times. The steaks are succulent. I am a Yelp and Tripadvisor Reviewer. I have been in some of the best Steakhouses in the world. The NY Strip 20 oz is in my top three steaks ever eaten in a restaurant. The atmosphere excellent and the music is sensational. We have also had great service at this establishment. Everyone is very friendly. With a huge shout out to Daniel. He is very knowledgeable, friendly, courteous and well mannered. He is an excellent server. I would recommend asking for him. I challenge you to this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

Gerald Wentworth, Aldie, VA

While attending a weekend in Baltimore to catch the Birds vs Detroit three of us guys went in search for a place to enjoy a cigar and a drink once we got our wives back to the hotel. We hit the gold mine of what has to be Baltimore’s hidden secrets. We sat outside and the Chairman of the Board (Terry) sat with us and enjoyed a smoke and after gave us a tour of the Man Cave. We will be returning on every trip to Baltimore and will be bringing friends. Thanks Terry for a relaxing evening.

James Bucket, Knoxville, TN

Our server Holly told us she was new to your restaurant but seemed very knowledgeable on menu selections, suggested our appetizer for us and, best of all, convinced us to stay for the Karaoke. Thank you again.

Chris Crosby, Glen Burnie, MD

My wife and I decided to come here for our first meal out as a newly married couple (married last night). Everything was amazing.

Canadian Traveler

We were traveling with my father (89), when it was time to go back to the hotel, the owner drove him back to the hotel because it was too far for him to walk, but too close to get a cab. They did everything to make our evening great. Food, entertainment, and hospitality… all top notch! Definitely will return on our next visit

Christopher V, Brookline, NH

At the conclusion of a week-long conference at the Convention Center, a work colleague and I meandered the streets looking for a place to eat before heading to BWI for our evening flights. We found this place, which had the feel of an ‘old-school’ restaurant where presumably the powerful eat. It just had that look. And the big-screen entertainment was Frank Sinatra. Of course, the food was as fabulous as you’d expect it to be. We will be back!

Robert & Jared Siegel, CT

We love Baltimore and everyone who continually makes us feel welcome year after year. P.S. Bring back “The Wire”…best show on TV ever! No competition! P.P.S. Sinatra and Lax – TWO WINNERS!

Stephen Joseph

Thank you for a wonderful day! Look forward to a long relationship.

Donna Rose-McEntee, Ridgefield Park, NJ

Took a few days with my daughter to explore Baltimore. Milton at Hotel Brexton recommended Supanos. Little did we know what a great recommendation this would turn out to be. Milton said he would arrange car service for us-Imagine our surprise when Terry Supano-the owner picked us up! This was a start of a wonderful evening. The restaurant is located just steps from the Inner Harbor. We walked around before!
